Cheri Pies, MSW DrPH is a Clinical Professor in the School of Public Health, University of California at Berkeley. Her research interests include reducing and eliminating health disparities and inequities in birth outcomes through community transformation and the implementation of the Life Course model, the use of incentives in delivery of reproductive health services, and the use of photovoice in defining community health issues for program evaluation, implementation and needs assessment. Dr. Pies directed the Family, Maternal and Child Health programs for Contra Costa County for over ten years.
In this podcast episode we discuss her most recent project, a 3 year grant from the Kellogg Foundation to fund the Best Babies Zone (BBZ) Initiative. This three-year multi-site, collaborative project is designed to improve birth outcomes, reduce infant mortality and address issues of overall community health in three “incubator” communities around the country – Cincinnati OH, New Orleans LA, and Oakland CA. Through a multi-sector approach, the BBZ Initiative will design and distribute a BBZ Workbook for use by other communities around the U.S. that seek to create a Best Babies Zone. Collaborative partners include AMCHP, CityMatCH, and the National Healthy Start Association.
