In 2012, California is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the first Paid Family Leave (PFL) law in the country. The program replaces up to 55% of a worker’s pay for up to six weeks to bond with a new child (including adopted and foster children) or to care for a seriously ill child, spouse, or domestic partner. Unfortunately many people who could benefit from the PFL program are not aware of their rights. Research shows the Latino and immigrant communities and low-income earners are least likely to be aware of the law.
